dorayaki recipe

made some dorayaki over the last weekend so just to share the recipe....

Ingredients: (make about 1 dozen dorayaki)

300g pancake flour
red bean paste
6 eggs
6tbsp honey
2tbsp sugar (optional)
200mL milk

pancake flour from Daiso

red bean paste from phoon huat
gotten my pancake flour from daiso, i think most brands are fine since the ingredients are more or less the same.... for the red bean paste, wanted to buy from Daiso but couldnt find it on that day so i bought it from phoon huat instead.... of cause not as nice as those you get from the store since phoon huat red bean paste is all blended so you wont get the individual beans.... but taste i think is still ok la....

Steps:
1) mix the liquid ingredients together first followed by sifting in the flour

liquid mixture with sifted flour

mix everything together

smooth batter

so when you are mixing the batter, sometimes you might notice lumps of flour being formed... that's normal, just continue to fold then the batter will become smooth

2. oil the pan, MUST be non-stick kind of pan... there is an important trick in frying dorayaki = DONT use too much oil..... another thing is  use a flat pan (i will elaborate in the next step)
add oil into the pan

wipe the oil with kitchen towel

lightly grease pan
you want to just lightly grease the pan cause excess oil will end up deep frying the batter... you want a fluffy chewy pancake, not a crispy waffle

3. add in the batter... for 1 medium size pancake is about 1.5tbsp of batter
merged pancake
you can see in this picture the importance of using a flat based frying pan... cause i am not using any mold for my dorayaki, the batter can slide around if the pan isnt flat bottom... you will end up having a merged pancake....

4. let the batter bubble
start bubbling
batter will start to bubble after about 30sec but DONT flip over yet cause the pancake isnt cook through yet, so you wont get this golden brown colour

slightly undercook pancake
this is what you get when you flip the pancake over too early... of cause if you prefer light brown pancake then that's fine too....

bubble throughout the pancake
but normally i will wait till bubbles are formed throughout the pancake, this is take approximately 2 min.... then i flip over
golden brown pancake
tada... golden brown.... ok, the degree of brown-ness is subjective, i dont want really brown pancake so this is good enough for me.... so after flipping over, cook for another 30sec or so till the pancake is thoroughly cooked

bear head pancake
so you can be creative and do different kind of pancakes instead of the conventional round shape... hubby join in the fun and made this bear head pancake, so cute =)

5. cool down the pancake..... i will put aside the pancake for awhile before putting in the filling
generous filling
you put the filling in the pancake, abit more in the center so that the pancake will have this puffy look....

cover with another pancake
final product
tada.... there is your dorayaki!!! looking good right??? it's pretty simple so you guys can probably try out over the long weekend =)

carnivore @ marina bay sands

on thursday, prof brought our lab to carnivore for lunch to celebrate his promotion & end of honours project.... i was really excited about it since we wanted to try it quite some time ago but didnt get the chance to do so.... we went to the outlet at MBS, the store is much smaller than i imagined since is a buffet style restaurant....

carnivore @ MBS
table set up
choices of meat
interesting sign
so the interesting about carnivore is that the staff will bring the meat to your table & cut them for you... on the table there will be this sign whereby you can swing to either the maroon (no thanks) or green (yes please) to indicate whether you want to have more serving of meat.... in addition to the meat choices, there is a small corner of salad bar included in the buffet...

section 1

section 2
i would say the salad bar sections were abit disappointing to me, i was expecting more variety of greens but is more of cooked food.... perhaps that's the brazilian style of food....

my food from salad bar

first cut of meat

more beef
grill pineapple
staff cutting the meat
as i mentioned the staff will bring the meat to your table & serve you there.... i think the meat was grilled nicely but too salty & oily..... the idea of having freshly grilled meat is nice but personally i am not a very meat person.... i cant eat too much meat so i end up eating fruits & marinated octopus from the salad bar... & my favourite food there is actually the garlic bread..... so i guess it kinds of defeat the purpose of going to carnivore but since this is a free lunch for us, of cause i have no complain..... but personally i wont visit carnivore again.... but for those meat lovers, i think it's still something that you can try =)

personal views & information about buying flats

as the title suggest, i just want to share some of my personal experience when i was looking for a flat... i believed i have mentioned in several of my posts that i have been looking for a flat for the passed 1 year + & i am still looking for one =( i have probably viewed over 50units in the west area but so far we still have no luck in finding our "dream" home... i believed i am being picky with my choice but why shouldnt you exercise some stringency when you have the chance.... so today i want to share some of my experience with you guys about my flat hunting journey....

1. BTO
ok, i believed like most young couples, we all wanted to try BTO first cause it's much cheaper than resales flats in the market....
benefits: definitely the price.... most BTO cost about $100,000 cheaper than the resale flats in the same area, that's a good deal especially if you managed to get a unit in the matured estates..... downpayment is only 5% of the unit price, followed by another 5% during key collection compared to straight 10% deposit for a resales, so most people can pay off that amount easily with their CPF.... & i believed most people will opt for HDB loan so that they can borrow up to 90% of the unit price compared to 80% loan from the bank (meaning you have to pay straight 20% deposit)....

cons: the down side is that you have to compensate the cheap cost with long waiting time (approximately 4 years) & some risks in your flats since you only imagine how the final products will be like..... my parents gotten their BTO last year & there was lots of defects in the units.... i believed you guys would have read many posts about the units defects so i think this is something that you cant escape & probably have to accept them or rectify them engaging your own contractors.... another not so attractive things about BTO is the location... most of the time the project will be built in the "not so convenient" place, eg: quite a distance from MRT... of cause everywhere in SG has the potential to develop into a bustling place but personally i am quite particular about convenience so i am quite skeptical about choosing those locations..... another thing is luck cause you need to ballot for your unit.... i guess we have been quite unlucky since our ballot numbers were quite out of the range, so either we were left with low floors units to choose from or no units at all.... we tried for like 4 times but still no luck so i completely gave up on the whole BTO idea....

conclusion: i would say BTO is mainly about the balance between cost & location.... of cause time too, so if you are not urgent for a home then i guess is a good deal....

2. resale
since we have no luck with our BTO balloting, for the passed year, my focus has been on resale.... since both hubby & i work in the west so we preferred to stay in the west...

benefits: technically you have the whole island of flats to choose from unless you have a particular area in mind, so you will have more choices compared to a specific estate to ballot for in BTO.... since it's an open market, there is no need to ballot but more of first come first serve.... you can choose the area that you like, specific blocks, unit levels & unit facing, basically you have the power to choose.... of cause there is a much shorter waiting time, a normal resale handover completion takes about 4 months... that's a much shorter time compared to 4 years in BTO

cons: the price for resale will generally be much higher than BTO so cost is definitely a major factor.... you have to pay at least 10% deposit & not to mention COV (cash over value) price.... currently the resale market is still picking up so COV price has dropped compared to last time but i think a safe bet will be to prepare about $10,000 cash for COV if you looking for a unit in good location.....

conclusion: if you can afford, i think resale is better than BTO cause you can choose what you want... if you are lucky, the resale unit is in good condition then you can save quite abit on renovation too

3. DBSS
honestly DBSS has never been inside my choice until recently because my jiejie gotten a DBSS couple of years ago & we didnt really like the layout.... so DBSS has this atas look compared to normal HDB, is somewhat an in between HDB & condo..... the main problem we have with the layout is the excessive number of balconies in the flat.... i think is nice to have a balcony in the living room but not when you have it in every single room!!!! as a result, the rooms are much smaller & you hardly have space to put furniture.... another thing is the tiny kitchen, we could barely fit 2 person inside... this is quite a problem for us since we tend to cook quite often..... nonetheless, DBSS still has its merits

benefits: the design is definitely more appealing than normal HDB... since it's still under HDB so the price is much more reasonable compared to condo but of cause you wont have fancy amenities...

cons: the cost.... although both DBSS & BTO are under HDB projects, their prices are very different... comparing in general, for the same unit size, DBSS cost at least $200,000 more than BTO... the payment method is also different from normal flats... you have to pay 5% option fee in CASH!!! for both BTO & resale, you can pay the down payment using CPF but DBSS you must pay hard CASH!!!! the subsequent deposit will vary between 5 - 15% depending on the type of loan you getting.... if you total household income is more than $8000, you must opt for bank loan, meaning you have to fork out 20% deposit yourself since bank loan is up to 80% of the unit price.... if you imagine a $500,000 unit, 20% will be $100,000!!! of cause the remaining 15% (excluding 5% option fee in CASH), you can pay with CPF but that's still $75,000!!! we certainly dont have so much $ inside our CPF, at least for now......

let me share my recent experience about DBSS... just couple of weeks ago, i stumble upon trivelis advertisement on propertyguru... it states that there are two 4-room units available at $635,000 onwards.... the price is of cause insanely high for a 4-room flat but since we have no luck with resale so we decided to just go down & take a look..... the agent first showed us the 3room show flat & i was quite surprise by its small size.... cause a normal 3room flat size is about 70sqm but trivelis 3 room size is 60sqm including 3sqm aircon ledge!!! next, she showed us the 4-room unit... another shock, the size of the living room is even smaller than a normal 3-room flat living room, of cause same goes for the bedrooms = tiny.... the floor size is 80sqm with 6sqm balcony & 3sqm aircon ledge, that's a usable area of 70sqm compared to 90sqm in normal 4-room flat.... we were really shocked by the sizes of the units & of cause recently there were posts online about residents complaining the horrible construction of trivelis (1,2)..... despite all these down sides, the estate still has its merits.... the location of the project is good, pretty near clementi mrt, within 10min walk.... the area is windy cause the plot of land is on elevated ground so you can get some good breeze if you staying on high floors.... similarly if you stay on high floors, the view is not too bad since the older blocks are maximum 13floors... at first we were also considering to get the tiny 4-room then sell it off after 5years, treat it as an investment... but after all the big commotion, we will have to give trivelis a miss....

conclusion: DBSS still has its merits but price is definitely a major cost.... especially with the upcoming complains about the sloppy work from developers (not only trivelis), i guess is best to think twice

that has been quite a long & wordy post but i hope it's informative for those of you who are searching for a house at the moment.... set your priority before deciding on which kinds of flats you should go for =)

desaru weekend trip

this is a pretty back dated post about my desaru weekend trip over good friday long weekend.... we drove over to desaru with couple of our friends to chill over the long weekend.... for those who are like me who didnt know where is desaru, it's actually pretty "near" to JB, is about 1hr drive from the woodland check point so i guess that's why quite a number of people chill there over the weekends....

so we reached woodland checkpoint about 8am+ & there was already a SUPER LONG queue!!! we wanted to reach earlier but our friend woke up late so nah... late as usual.... so we spend like almost 2hr to pass the custom!!!! we first stop by this ""mall" near the causeway to have our breakfast & stock up some snacks to munch in the resort....

on the way to resort

trees along the way
finally reached desaru

lotus desaru resort
mini cart to transport within the resort
resort lobby

so we FINALLY reached the resort after like almost 4hr ride!!! i guessed it was the long weekend so there was quite a number of people at the check in counter.... apparently you need to pay for the wifi and the only free wifi place is the lobby & the signal was pretty weak there too... so if you are those hardcore phone user then probably you need to find an alternative solution.....

resorts blocks
actually when we drove into the resorts i was abit puzzled cause my impression of resort is like those huts or bungalows style so i was quite shock when i saw rows of blocks..... lets move onto the rooms...
dinning area

living room

common toilet

common room 1

common room 2

master bedroom
master room toilet
we booked a 3 bedroom "suite" cause there was 6 of us.... when i first stepped into the room, i was like this is a chalet not resort lea... i guessed i have heard too much about those pretty resorts that my lab mate went so i had super high expectation....but we gotten our room for quite a cheap rate since our friend's uncle worked in the resort we had a good lobang.... so after resting awhile in the room, we went to get our lunch at a restaurant in the resort...

our lunch -seafood place
our lunch
the food wasnt very nice & it took so long to prepare... & worst, the food were not even hot... really not worth to eat in the resort since they charged quite expensive compared to outside stores.... after our no so nice lunch, we went to walk around on the beach....

soft mud like sand
the beach was pretty big & you can do some water sports there... we were all lazy so didnt try out any water sports but just walked along the beach.... the wave was pretty strong even during low tide so not really safe to swim there... but is nice to walk along the coast... especially on the soft mud like sand... after walking on the beach, we went back to laze around in the room before heading out for dinner & main highlight for the day = see firefly!!!

night view of resort
i think there are 2 firefly viewing place, one closer to resort = about 30min drive, another one is closer to JB but the staff say there have more firefly... but lazy us just go ahead with the nearby site...

firefly farm restaurant

dinner

ferry to watch firefly

firefly farm
so there was this restaurant at the firefly farm so most people will have their dinner there before joining the ferry ride... dinner was nice & filling.... didnt take any picture of the ferry ride cause it was very dark..... when the ferry staff splashed water onto the bushes, the firefly will come out & you will see speck of light.... i agree with the resort staff that there wasnt alot of firefly around but i think it was quite a pretty sight to see small "dancing light" in the dark.... the staff was also very pro, he just catch the firefly with his barehand & passed to the passengers to see.... he caught 2 for me =) the firefly was really much smaller than i expect, so you cant feel them flying around on your hand..... so that wraps up our first night =)

the next morning we had breakfast at a nearby prata place... cheap & nice!!! we were so full that we actually skipped lunch...... our first stop was ostrich farm... honestly i wasnt very into this place cause i dont like birds, especially BIG birds..... but i just tag along....

the ostrich farm was pretty small but there was a cafe there so people will normally had their lunch there & try out ostrich meat.... we were too full to try so we had coconut juice cause the weather was super hot..... i was very surprise to see one of the ostrich just stood there & let people take photo... the staff said it had special training but seriously, super tame.... my friends took photo with it but no thanks for me..... after chilling out at the ostrich farm, we went to fruit farm...

free packet of fruits
the fruit farm was pretty big & it was quite fun since you get to see where the fruits came from... i never knew the jumbu flowers were so pretty..... but it will be quite hot since you will walking under the hot sun..... towards the end of the tour, you will stopby in a small zoo area.... they mainly have small animals & birds..... i was only interested in the rabbit.... it was super tame, just rest there & let people pet.... at the end of the tour, you will get a packet of fruits.... i was expecting nicer fruits since they came fresh from the farm but i was disappointed..... you can also buy some fresh fruits at the store but the variety was quite limited... i guess april wasnt a fruit season.....

for dinner, we tried out this steamboat place near the resort....
steamboat place

food variety
the place was a small family run business but really cheap, 23rm per pax but you cant expect much from the food selection..... we thought the usual sotong ball, crabstick should be safe but somehow they had a weird taste so i end up eating veggie & mushroom..... after disappointing dinner, we went back for supper & our drinking session!!!

supper
haha actually our intention was to have a drinking session cause we thought malaysia alcohol will be cheap but sadly it cost about same as SG.... nonetheless we still had quite afew bottles to finish per pax..... & that wraps up our second night in desaru

so the last day we checked out & had our brunch before driving back to SG... we drove to this seaside place & there was quite a number of seafood place there.... we didnt know what to choose & just settle for one of them which looked pretty proper...
seafood place

lunch
i wont say the food were superb but i think it was slightly cheaper than SG.... with that marks the end of our long weekend trip in desaru..... i think it was an ok trip, nothing much to do there but more of just eating & chilling out =)
