June HK trip - hk portion

FINALLY after much procrastination I am writing about my June HK trip.... not going to talk about all the details since it was a simple trip & we seriously didnt do much there.... so just share some of the lobang, nice places to visit or over rated places that you should NOT try when you go there....

first of all our hotel = eaton hotel..... the hotel is located in between yau ma tei and jordan, i would say somewhat really in the middle of the 2 stations... let me start with some pictures of the room...

the room

wardrobe + safe

bath tub

toilet

bed

handy phone instruction

light switches
i would say the hotel rooms have quite a standard size, maybe towards the slightly bigger size since it's a 4start hotel after all.... pricing wise i not exactly sure since my in laws were the ones who bought the package but i would say close to 200SGD/night..... one major advantage of this hotel is that each room comes with a handy phone which works something like a portable wifi + gps so you can use it to navigate around & do some simple searches... i think this is definitely useful for tourists especially for those who didnt want to get any local sim card cause you can use it to make FREE international calls!!!! but personally i wont recommend this hotel because of its location, is quite a walk to reach the mtr station... i would say good 10min walk to reach jordan station & imagine yourself walking under the hot sun??? we were always sweating like mad by the time we reached the station..... another down side is that, it's pretty hard to find eating places in jordan... there are some restaurants & small cafes but choices are limited... of cause you can venture into temple streets but that's not somewhat that i would fancy going.... you also cant find any supermarket nearby so you probably have to get your necessities from convenient stores.... i would say mongkok is still a better options since it has almost everything you need, be it food or shopping....

next, about the hotel food choices.... we didnt get the package which include breakfast so we paid for the breakfast buffet which cost about 40SGD/pax....

different variety of pastries

pancakes & bacon

fruits & salad

breakfast portion 1

breakfast portion 2
as you can see, there wasnt a wide variety of the food available.... i was somewhat disappointed with the selection but since my in laws decided to go ahead, may as well just try it.... taste wise i would say not too bad which sort of make up for the lack of selection.... but for that price, i think it's more worthwhile to source for own breakfast at other places....

another day we went to try breakfast at main st cafe, which is located at the hotel basement... is a simple cafe but i would say the food actually tasted even better than the buffet
breakfast

drinks
for hotel customers you can get a complimentary drink with any food purchase.... the smoked salmon bagel tasted quite nice.... i saw mont blanc so i just ordered it for breakfast, haha.... but sadly it doesnt taste as nice as it looks....

ok, thats enough about the hotel, lets talk about other things.... for this trip, i actually plan to try out some of the famous restaurants & go to more places but due to the super hot weather, we kind of no mood to go anywhere.... actually june-aug is the hottest period in hk, i believed the same thing for other countries.... but hk is seriously HOT!! or should i say steaming HOT!!!! I havent been to spain or shanghai which always experienced heat wave but hk is seriously hot... i felt is somewhat hotter than SG.... so you will see many people carrying mini fan when they walk around....
rilakkuma hand held fan
hence, i also gotten my own hand held fan =) it's manual, you have to rotate the handle in order to generate wind.... kind of tiring but at least is battery free..... other than hot weather, hk also can rain like mad during summer time... & i do mean super heavy downpour.... so do take note of the weather forecast & prepare yourself for the trip.....

i am going to share 2 new places which i tried this time, first is 金華冰廳 which is located somewhere near 花园街 at prince edward station.... we just stumble upon this cafe cause the weather was too hot so we want to blow some air con & try out the polo bun.... i didnt know it's supposed to be a famous cafe but i saw quite a number of customers inside so we just went in to try...

polo bun & egg tart
perhaps i kind of lost touch with hk culture but i was quite puzzled when i saw the notice that each customer must at least order a drink if they were to sit in the cafe.... i mean if its some fancy high class cafe, i am not surprised but for a normal neighbourhood cafe to impose such rule? i thought it's abit too much but oh well, give it a chance.... so we ordered the famous hk food = hk style milk tea (hkd17), polo bun + butter (hkd9) & egg tart (hkd6).... & i shall sum up everything in 2 words = NOT nice.... or should i say horrible!!! first of all, the milk tea was super average, we didnt taste much of a tea taste... second, polo bun was hard & blend... it's supposed to have win some award cause i saw some poster on the wall.... i was like whatever man..... third, egg tart... OMG... absolutely disappointed... completely no egg taste at all!?!?!??! i was like "what was i eating?!??!?! some tasteless yellow curd???" we were absolutely disturbed by the food quality & somemore the prices were not cheap!!! i mean it could be just unfortunate that the food tasted horrible that day but for me, i am definitely not going back there again.....

another restaurant we tried was 鳳城酒家... my relatives arranged for this place cause not many restaurants have big tables for 20pax & they said the food was not bad there..... we went to the causeway bay outlet.... is quite a walk from the mtr station & not easy to find if you are not familiar with the area....

when my uncle showed me the set menu, my eyes almost POPPED out!!! hkd4680 for 12 pax!! i mean ya, they have fancy dishes like those used for wedding banquet but seriously!!??!?! but since they chose that place so we just kept calm & go ahead with the order... i didnt manage to take picture of the photo cause not very nice to do so in front of my army of relatives..... but thankfully the dishes were pretty nice.... my uncle told me the place is famous for the roast chicken, goose feet & baked pudding.... just nice everything is included in our set so we get the try everything.... my personal favourite was the baked pudding, it tasted like custard curd, yummy....i believed the restaurant served other cheaper alternatives so i think it's still ok to try this restaurant.....

lastly for those people who like to buy 老婆饼from 恒香, their mongkok outlet has shifted.... the new location is at the end of 女人街, meaning the side furthest from mongkok station....

with that, it marks the end of my hk portion trip... next post i will talk about macau =)
